Flooring in New Toronto
New Toronto was laid out in 1890 as an industrial town with numbered streets, and little residential building happened until after the First World War; early housing was built for factory workers, including 42 English Cottage-style homes the New Toronto Housing Commission built on Eighth Street in 1918. Former institutional and factory land has been reused: Goodyear's site north of Lake Shore became the seven-building Lakeshore Village apartment and co-op complex, and the Lakeshore Psychiatric Hospital grounds became Humber's Lakeshore Campus.
What changes the job in New Toronto
- Most older houses date from after the First World War, when residential building in the factory town took off: wood-framed homes rather than slab-built suites.
- Lakeshore Village (seven buildings on the old Goodyear site) is co-op and apartment housing, so the co-op or building management is part of any flooring job there.
