Do Flooring Installers Move Furniture in Toronto?

Many flooring installers do move furniture, but not always for free and never everything. At Floorrable, moving is a set step in every estimate: clear the rooms yourself at no charge, or pay for the crew to move furniture, or furniture and appliances. Pianos, safes and gas lines are never moved by the flooring crew.
What flooring installers move, and what they leave
The crew moves what a flooring crew can lift and put back safely within your home: beds, sofas, tables, dressers emptied of their contents, bookcases emptied of books. With the appliance option, that extends to the fridge, the range and the washer and dryer.
Some things stay put no matter which option you pick, because they need a specialist mover or a technician rather than a flooring crew. Floorrable excludes these from every moving option:
- pianos and organs
- safes and gun cabinets
- aquariums and terrariums
- pool tables
- wall-mounted TVs
- antiques and art
If one of those sits in a room getting a new floor, plan around it before install day. Take a wall-mounted TV down yourself if you want it off the wall while the crew works. An aquarium or a piano needs its own mover booked first, or the floor stops short of it with a transition.
Do you have to empty the room before installers arrive?
Only if you chose the free option. Most Toronto condo customers do clear the rooms themselves, because a one-bedroom suite holds less than a house and the saving is real. Whatever you pick, a few things are always yours to deal with.
| Option | Who moves what | Usually suits |
|---|---|---|
| Clear it yourself (free) | You empty the rooms before install day | Condo suites and owners with help on hand |
| Furniture | The crew moves furniture within the home and puts it back | Bedrooms and living rooms with heavy pieces |
| Furniture and appliances | The crew also moves the fridge, range, washer and dryer | Kitchens and laundry rooms getting the new floor |
Under every option, empty drawers, closets and shelves, take down anything fragile, and unplug electronics. Closets matter more than people expect: if the new floor runs into them, the floor of every closet has to be bare.
Where does furniture go in a small condo?
Into the other half of the same room. In a Toronto condo there is rarely a spare bedroom or garage to hold a living room, so the crew uses the float method: move everything to one side, lay the floor on the empty side, move the furniture onto the new floor, then do the second half.
Moving stays within your home. The crew never takes furniture out of the unit, into a hallway, a locker or storage. If a suite is so full that half a room cannot hold the other half's furniture, a short-term storage booking is yours to arrange before install day.
Who moves the fridge and the gas stove?
The crew moves them with the appliance option, but nobody on a flooring crew touches a gas line. In Ontario only a gas technician certified by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA) may disconnect and reconnect a gas appliance. When a gas range or dryer is in the way, Floorrable books a licensed technician.
Electric ranges, fridges and washers are moved without a technician. A fridge with a water line for an ice maker needs the supply shut off first, so find the valve before the day. More on the full sequence is in how condo flooring installation works in Toronto.
What changes the cost of moving furniture
The amount, not the distance. Prices are still being finalized, so this page gives no figures, but the estimate prices moving by how much there is to shift: furniture only, or furniture and appliances, room by room.
- How many rooms are getting the new floor, since every one has to be cleared and refilled.
- Appliances, which take more hands and more care than a sofa, and a gas range adds a technician visit.
- Old floor removal is a separate line, priced by what is on the floor now, because carpet and tile take very different tear-out and disposal.
The supply and install details show what else sits in the price, including old floor removal. To see your own number, get a price range in about two minutes and pick the moving option that fits your home; the free measurement confirms it before anything is ordered.

Some do and some charge. At Floorrable, clearing the rooms yourself is the free option, and having the crew move furniture, or furniture and appliances, is a paid option you choose in the estimate. Either way, you empty drawers, closets and shelves before install day.
No. In Ontario only a TSSA-certified gas technician may disconnect and reconnect a gas appliance. A flooring crew can move the appliance once it is disconnected, so Floorrable books a licensed technician when a gas range or dryer has to come out for the new floor.
No. Moving stays inside the home. The crew shifts furniture to one half of a room, floors the empty half, then swaps. Nothing goes into the hallway, a storage locker or off site, so arrange your own storage if a suite is too full.
Floorrable excludes pianos and organs, safes and gun cabinets, aquariums and terrariums, pool tables, wall-mounted TVs, and antiques and art from every moving option. Book a specialist mover for those, or agree where the new floor will stop around them before the date is set.
